Traditionally, hydraulic cylinder rods and their corresponding rod eyes are separate components that are welded together. On a recent project, our team at Ram Reman manufactured the rod and rod eye from a single, solid piece.
This one-piece construction eliminates the weld joint, a potential point of failure, resulting in a stronger, more reliable component.
Designed for accurate precision across many applications, the rods were manufactured using a XYZ Milling machine. This machine meticulously mills and shapes the steel, forming both the rod and the integrated rod eye.
After the machining was completed, the rods underwent a specialised heat treatment process known as nitrocarbonising.
This is a form of case hardening where both nitrogen and carbon are introduced into the surface of the steel. The process creates a hard, wear-resistant outer layer while maintaining a tough core.
This surface hardness is essential for protecting the rod from the harsh, high-friction environments in which hydraulic cylinders operate. The result is a hydraulic rod that is not only robust in its design but also exceptionally resistant to wear and fatigue, ensuring a longer service life for the entire cylinder.
This innovative approach in hydraulic rod manufacturing demonstrates a commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology to produce components that are stronger, more reliable, and ultimately, more efficient.
